Wilkins: Ponte de gelo na Antártica quebra

Uma ponte de gelo que liga um bloco do tamanho da Jamaica a duas ilhas da Antártica quebrou, informaram investigadores este fim-de-semana. Cientistas afirmam que o rompimento pode indicar que o bloco Wilkins, como é conhecido o território, flutuará livremente, o que seria um sinal das mudanças provocadas pelo aquecimento global.

European Parliament approves new anti-discrimination legislation

"A wonderful victory for equal rights in Europe", says Dutch Member of European Parliament Emine Bozkurt who led the negotiations on the issue for the European Social-Democrats. She feels however very disappointed by the no-vote of the European Christian-Democrats. During the votes it became clear the overall majority of them voted against the new directive. The proposal for legislation banning discrimination based on sexual orientation, religion, age and disability throughout the European Union was approved despite this opposition by the largest political group in the EU Parliament.

Hate-Crimes Bill Introduced in the House

Legislation extending hate-crimes protections to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and disabled Americans was introduced in the House Thursday night. The bipartisan bill sponsored by Rep. John Conyers, a Democrat from Michigan, and Rep. Mark Kirk, a Republican from Illinois, was approved by both chambers of Congress in 2007 but was ultimately removed from the Defense spending bill it was attached to based on a veto threat from President George W. Bush. President Barack Obama supports the legislation and has pledged to sign it into law.
