A Lista Vermelha das espécies de 2011 torna oficial a extinção do rinoceronte negro da África ocidental e considera ameaçadas 19.570 animais e plantas, revela a UICN (União Mundial para a Conservação). Em Portugal são 245 as espécies com esse estatuto.

O rinoceronte negro da África ocidental (Diceros bicornis longipes) é declarado extinto e o rinoceronte branco da África central (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) possivelmente extinto na natureza.
