ENDA: Personal Stories Will Make The Difference
On Monday of this week, I was fortunate to be one of 250 guests invited to the White House for President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama’s reception honoring the 40th anniversary of Stonewall. Like many of my fellow attendees, I was anxious to hear what the President had to say about how he planned to honor his campaign commitments to the LGBT community. He reiterated his administration’s efforts to pass a transgender inclusive ENDA, which is a policy already in place in at least 176 Fortune 500 companies. This followed a June 18th Oval Office event where President Obama further demonstrated his Administration’s commitment to LGBT equality in the Federal workplace by signing a presidential memorandum that will give Office of Personnel Management Director John Berry the authority to ban workplace discrimination for all members of the LGBT community.

Federal Judge Finds Dismissal of Transgendered Employee May Violate the Constitution
U.S. District Judge Richard W. Story ruled on June 25 that Georgia legislative officials may have violated the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause when they terminated an employee because she was undergoing gender transition. Rejecting a motion to dismiss by five Georgia officials who are charged with responsibility for the dismissal decision, Judge Story found that Vandiver Elizabeth Glenn’s complaint "clearly states a claim for denial of equal protection" on alternative theories of sex discrimination or discrimination on the basis of a medical condition, gender identity disorder. Glenn v. Brumby, 2009 Westalw 1849951 (N.D.Ga.).

Frank introduces trans-inclusive ENDA bill
The LGBT community erupted in anger 20 months ago when U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., introduced a version of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act ( ENDA ) that excluded protection for “gender identity.” Critics also charged that the 2007 ENDA was “riddled with loopholes” that significantly weakened protections even for lesbians and gay men in the workplace. Frank said a bill including protections for transgendered people simply didn't have the votes.

CNN: Transgender People are Here to Stay
CNN had an article online last week titled "Commentary: Transgender people are everywhere," by a transsexual woman named Donna Rose. She starts out reminding us of Chaz Bono, Sonny and Cher's kid, formerly named Chastity, who recently announced that he was transitioning from a female to male gender identity. This is a high-profile celebrity transition, Rose says, but it is not such a rare event.
