Las Fiestas del Orgullo Gay 2010 han dado hoy su pistoletazo de salida con el tradicional pregón, que este año ha corrido a cargo de los actores Imanol Arias y Ana Millán, que han exigido la equiparación de derechos para los transexuales.

Transsexual refused final op wins right to make claim for compensation
A transsexual who has been told she cannot have a breast implant operation has been given the right to make a claim for compensation.
After undergoing £60,000 worth of surgery last year, Miss Lee, formerly known as Raymond Harwood, was told that she couldn’t have the final £8,000 needed to complete the transformation process.
Miss Lee, from Southend in Essex, was granted legal aid so she can appeal the decision in court.

Nation’s Gay, Transgender Community Searches for a Voice in the Mass Media
The media wield enormous influence in informing public opinion, and in Indonesia this power has often been used to discriminate against marginalized social groups such as the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

The Depathologization movement is sexist
In Canada, I was quite shocked to learn transsexual men can have hysterectomies after a certain amount of time on testosterone: this leads to premature menopause which is an indicator for hysterectomy–without the need of going through the DSM or the Standards of Care, AT ALL.
The pathologization of transsexual men in Canada, at least for hysterectomy surgery has never been; ‘top’ surgery, depending on the doctor, can be similarly finessed.
I had to obtain a diagnosis for GID and follow the Standards of Care. I would argue there is a fundamental sexism involved here–one I have never heard discussed.

Congresswoman: 5 Years “Realistic” for ENDA
Congresswoman Jackie Speier of California told theBay Area Reporter on Sunday that it was "realistic" to say it could take as long as five years to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. The Democrat said that the bill’s prospects for this year were in question, though she said, "'don't ask, don't tell' will be history this year."

If Your Health Care System Grants Taxpayer-Funded Gender Reassignments, You've Got To Finish the Job
Miranda Lee, a 40-year-old MTF Brit, is part-way through her government-paid transition. So far she's had £60,000 worth of procedures to become a woman, but still needs £8,000 for a breast augmentation. And it's that last line item the National Health Service is refusing her, saying they don't have the funds for "cosmetic" procedures. So she's suing — and, just like her gender reassignment, she's using taxpayer dollars to do it, enlisting legal aid money to file charges. In reporting the story, The Sun is typically sensationalistic, but it comes down to this: If your nation's health care system allows transgender citizens to use federal dollars for gender reassignment procedures, then there's no going halfway. It's all or nothing. Otherwise you end up with folks like Lee, in limbo between genders, and physically and mentally distraught.

D.C.’s Transgender Community Suffers from Lack of HIV Statistics
After this week’s post on the state of HIV in D.C., a commenter asked for some current statistics on the HIV/AIDS rate in the District’s transgender population. Good luck. D.C.’s Department of Health doesn’t track cases based on gender identity in its annual report on the epidemic [PDF], though it does compile numbers on race, gender, Ward, and mode of transmission (ex. men who have sex with men). The CDC also fails to address gender identity [PDF] in its reports.
