Murderer of Turkish Transwoman Receives Life Imprisonment [VIA EMAIL]

A note about Derya Yilmaz - a transwoman who was stabbed 30 times to death in her house in Antalya in February 2010.

1st High Criminal Court in Antalya gave its final decision today: the murderer got a lifelong prison sentence with the crime of "intentionally killing a person". This is good news. The judge rejected the demand of the perpetrator for a sentence decrease.

Still, since there is no focus on the hatred motive behind the murders by the prosecutors or the judges, we have been facing the difficulty of telling the judicial authorities that these are transphobic hate murders. This is why we need to have a trans-inclusive hate crimes legislation.
