J. Michael Bailey es un psicólogo estadounidense mejor conocido para su trabajo en la biología y sobre la orientación sexual y por haber escrito un papel que justifica el derecho de los padres a abortar los niños homosexuales si en el futuro la tecnología permitiría detectar la homosexualidad in utero. En 2003, Bailey publicó un libro The Man Who Would Be Queen: The Science of Gender-Bending and Transsexualism. Este libro trata de muchos asuntos relacionados a temas de homosexualidad y transexualidad. El aspecto más polémico del libro es su división de todas las transexuales en sólo dos categorías basadas en su orientación sexual y no en la identidad del género. La "autogynephilia" se describe como un fetiche asociado con la masturbación en que el hombre es excitado sexualmente por la fantasía de él mismo como una mujer.
