The Gender Trust Blog: Bully For You
One of the most depressing aspects of challenging transphobia is convincing people it is wrong, or indeed that it exists, (of which my spellchecker remains unconvinced).

Skirts in School Uniforms “Discriminate” against Transsexuals: UK Human Rights Commission
The iconic image of sweet little English school girls in their uniforms could become a thing of the past if the government follows the advice of its new “human rights commission.” Requiring skirts in school uniforms discriminates against school girls who want to be boys, the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), said in a report this week.

In France, Transsexuals Celebrate a Small Victory
Several decades have passed since the West stopped considering homosexuality a mental illness. But for transsexuals, that kind of milestone has been elusive — until now. Last month, France became the first country in the world to remove transsexualism from its official list of mental disorders — a major victory when it comes to acceptance of this oft misunderstood condition. "I'm relieved. People might begin to look at us differently," says transsexual blogger Caphi (a blended name she's chosen to represent Philippe, the man she was born as, and Caroline, the woman she's transforming into). "It's a start."

Born With Male, Female Private Parts
Help is on the way for a two-year-old child who has both male and female genitals.
The mother of the child sounded the SOS when she brought the child for free medical treatment by Korean doctors under the African Children Foundation. The doctors have told the mother that the child has hermaphrodite, a congenial genital disorder which means having both female and male private parts.
The Korean doctors on Saturday decried the child’s condition, saying the child must be given urgent medical attention.

My Jakarta: Seruni, Transsexual Activist
Seruni recently spent nearly half a day with fellow transgendered men in Bukit Duri, West Jakarta, as part of a discussion about HIV/AIDS at the headquarters of the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM). Earlier this month, Seruni was crowned Jakarta’s Miss Transgendered Youth Concerned about HIV/AIDS. The Bukit Duri discussion marked the beginning of Seruni’s one-year stint as the voice of transgendered Jakartans.(Photo: "When I told my parents about how I had been secretly wearing dresses, they didn’t throw me out," Seruni says.)

It's not too late to save 'normal'
As chairman of the task force that created the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), which came out in 1994, I learned from painful experience how small changes in the definition of mental disorders can create huge, unintended consequences.
Our panel tried hard to be conservative and careful but inadvertently contributed to three false "epidemics" -- attention deficit disorder, autism and childhood bipolar disorder. Clearly, our net was cast too wide and captured many "patients" who might have been far better off never entering the mental health system.

This case is about, and for, all of us
On February 19th a motion was filed in Guyana’s high court to challenge a law that criminalized cross-dressing, and under which seven persons were arrested in 2009 and charged with wearing female attire. Four – Quincy McEwan, Seon Clarke, Joseph Fraser and Seyon Persaud – have brought the constitutional challenge, with the support of the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) and a group of lawyers, including from the recently established University of the West Indies Rights Advocate Project (U-RAP). Sunday’s Trinidad Express cites local gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender advocates who say this case will have far-reaching effects region-wide. It brings to mind what nearly came to pass in St. Vincent last year, where attempts at constitutional reform would have enshrined individual freedoms and social justice for all, while at the same time outlawing gay marriage.
