Pride 2010: From section 28 to Home Office float, Tories come out in force
When the Conservatives last had their hands on the tiller of power, none of their MPs would admit to being homosexual, they voted against lowering the age of consent for gay sex, and invented a law which made it illegal for schools to mention homosexuality.
How things change: tomorrow, eight years after Alan Duncan became the first Tory MP to come out of his own volition, Nick Herbert, the openly gay Conservative policing minister, will give a speech at Pride London about "how the Tories have come a helluva long way".

Thousands march with Pride across London
A woman in the crowd at Oxford Circus pushed her way to the front of the barriers snaking their way through the centre of London.
"Is the Queen coming past?" she asked.
Not quite, but the thousands taking part in the Pride London march on Saturday made a right royal racket, and many of their costumes were certainly majestic.

Homosexual worker pleads not guilty
Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ) worker Memory Mhambi last week pleaded not guilty to charges of possessing pornographic material when his trial commenced in Harare before Magistrate Sandra Mupindu.
Asked by Mupindu how he pleaded to the charges after they had been put to him by the state Mhambi said he denied the charges that he was found in possession of pornographic material.??
Mhambi, whose employer is the only representative body for homosexual people in the mainly conservative Zimbabwe, was arrested together with Ellen Chademana, an administrative assistant at GALZ last month at their Milton Park offices in Harare.
The two were charged with possession of obscene, indecent or prohibited articles in contravention of Section 26 (1) (b) of the Censorship and Entertainment Control Act chapter 10:04.

Indian transgenders demand acceptance in Society
Transgenders across India celebrated the first anniversary of the Delhi High Court's decision of decriminalization of gay sex.
The transgenders in national capital New Delhi were very excited, but said that they should be accepted across the country.
"It is a cheering day.
We cannot celebrate it with complete freedom. Only the people of Delhi accept us right now. We want that the entire country should accept us," said Manav.

Gays unmask to celebrate
The much-hyped Queer Azadi rally at Azad Maidan on Friday may not have had an impressive turnout compared to last March’s Mumbai’s Gay Pride, but confidence levels in the crowd of over 500 cheering people soared visibly higher.
A large number of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders (LGBT) showed up with unmasked faces, a sign in itself of the change brought about in the year since the Delhi High Court decriminalised consensual homosexual sex.

Nation’s Gay, Transgender Community Searches for a Voice in the Mass Media
The media wield enormous influence in informing public opinion, and in Indonesia this power has often been used to discriminate against marginalized social groups such as the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Homosexuality is often portrayed in local media as a sexual aberration or deviant behavior. These and similar other labels are used to denounce the LGBT community through the media, both directly and indirectly.

Killed In Custody? New Developments Over the Death of Veronnica Baxter
Veronnica Baxter was an Indigenous transexual woman with a “Barbie doll body” – a well-known personality along Kings Cross’s Golden Mile.
On Tuesday March 10, 2008, just days after Mardi Gras, Veronnica was arrested on drug charges and sent to Silverwater Metropolitan Detention Centre.
Six days later Veronnica was dead in custody – reportedly found hanging in her cell.
Veronnica’s tragic death, and the circumstances surrounding it, have caused many to speculate that she fell victim to racism, or homophobia within the prison system.
Now, 15 months on, details obtained by City Hub add weight to this suspicion, and cast further doubt over the above version of events. (Photo)

Shooting stuns Castro
Bevan Dufty was standing near the main stage at Pink Saturday when he saw the crowd suddenly turn and run. He instantly recognized what had just happened.
"San Francisco has a homicide problem," the openly gay District 8 supervisor told the Bay Area Reporter. "The city has worked mightily to address it, and homicide has reduced significantly last year. But it hasn't gone away. And that problem came to the Castro."
