The Memoirs of Randa the Trans, written with Lebanese journalist Hazem Saghieh, details the author’s childhood and adolescence in her home country of Algeria, culminating in her decision to live as a transgendered woman. According to an article in the Sydney Morning Herald, Randa’s decision was met with threats against her life, but she persisted in her determination to live according to her individual choice.

Trans death in custody: inquiry demanded
Veronica Baxter was arrested by Redfern police and charged with six counts of supplying illegal drugs then placed at the all-male Silverwater Remand Centre, only to be found hanging in her cell six days later.
Veronica had not been monitored for 14 hours before being discovered dead, raising many questions about her placement in the all-male prison.
According to the NSW (Administration of Sentences) Crimes Act 1999, transgender people must be given the right to choose which gender appropriate facility they would be prefer to be placed in – currently, however, intersex people do not have the same rights to choose from.

In a ruling issued Friday, U.S. District Judge Richard Story ruled Glenn was subjected to sex discrimination. The judge also scheduled a July 13 hearing to determine what remedy should be granted to Glenn.

Rhode Island Gov. Vetoes Transgender Hate Crimes Bill
Republican Gov. Don Carcieri vetoed a “hate crimes” bill last Wednesday that would have included transgenders as a protected class under Rhode Island state law.
“I vetoed this legislation in the past and I do so again,” Carcieri declared.
In a veto message, Carcieri said that Rhode Island already has hate crimes legislation on the books that empowers the state police to intervene in crimes related to bias. However, he added that the terms “gender identity and expression” were “confusing.”
