A case with implications for the rights and status of transgender people is before the Australian High Court.
In 2007 and 2008 two transsexuals aged 34 and 28, wanting to change the gender recorded on their birth certificates from female to male, were heard by authorities in West Australia.
The pair, referred to for privacy reasons as AH and AB, had double mastectomies and were undergoing testosterone treatment resulting in increased male characteristics.
