ITV Cymru Wales' Y Byd ar Bedwar win transgender coverage award
ITV Wales' current affairs programme made for S4C, Y Byd ar Bedwar have been presented with a Transgender Television Award for their coverage of the transgender community in Wales.

Gender Recognition: The Debate So Far
Tomorow, Tuesday 3rd February, members of Seanad Eireann will advance to Committee Stage debate on the Gender Recognition Bill 2014.
At Committee Stage, Senators have an opportunity to offer amendments to the current Bill. They also have the opportunity to raise issues with the Bill in more detail.
It has been an interesting debate so far, as Senators from across the house have almost unanimously raised the same three problems:

Trans woman Mehtap [Eylül] Cansın committed suicide by jumping off the Bosphorus Bridge on January 5, 2015. Death has become so ordinary in this society that I have no doubt this suicide will be brushed aside like the other suicides. It will be completely forgotten since the person who is dead is not one of “us” due to her sexual preference. I do not know if I should either say “what a pity!” or “such a shame!” Mehtap Cansın was only 24 years old. She recorded a video right before she committed suicide. At her last moment and with her last breath she voiced her complaint, trying to explain her situation one last time and to reach out to others:

The owner of a Turkish bath who did not let a trans woman enter the establishment was charged and fined for discrimination. Lawyer Eren Keskin stated that this is the first time a punishment was given under this article related to trans individuals and said “I think that this verdict will give confidence to trans individuals on this matter. If the Supreme Court approves this verdict, they may live life a bit easier.”

Free Health Support for Trans Guesthouse from Beşiktaş Municipality
Taking the lead, the Beşiktaş Municipality [in Istanbul] has begun offering free health service support to the Trans Guesthouse. As part of the support, trans women lodging at the guesthouse underwent a medical check-up on 30 January.

AVP learns of an anti-transgender hate violence assault in the Bronx
AVP has learned of a brutal anti-transgender hate violence incident that occurred on that occurred on January 18th at the corner of Davidson Avenue and West 192nd Street in the University Heights neighborhood of the Bronx. According to a local media report, Jocelyn Diaz, a transgender woman, was approached by a man in a group asking her for a cigarette before attacking her with a bat and using derogatory slurs about her gender. Jocelyn Diaz’s arm was broken in the attack, which is currently being investigated as a hate crime.
